Presidency raises concern regarding Percy Stewart
The municipality has maintained that much-needed maintenance at various water pump stations will be given urgent attention following a letter from the president.
Mogale City received a letter from President Cyril Ramaphosa expressing major concern regarding the challenges at the Percy Stewart Wastewater Treatment Works (PSWWTW) and sewage pump stations in Munsieville and Brickvale (Tarlton).
According to Mogale City Local Municipality’s communication officer Refilwe Mahlangu, the municipality responded to the presidency’s letter through the Office of the Premier on October 15.
She said Mogale City also submitted a report and initiated contact with Gauteng Premier Panyaza Lesufi and the office of the MEC for Co-operative Governance and Traditional Affairs. A meeting is also being scheduled to further discuss the matter.

“While the municipality acknowledges historic PSWWTW and sewage pump stations challenges and endeavours to keep affected parties abreast of developments at the plant and sites, the municipality would like to assure residents, local businesses and members of the media that the facilities are receiving the necessary attention to ensure that effluent discharged into our rivers is safe for people, animals and the environment,” Mahlangu said.
She also added that although the ongoing refurbishment work at the plant and sewer pump stations may be delayed due to budget constraints, critical material lead time and the extent of the required work, concerted efforts are being made to fully restore our wastewater treatment infrastructure. The recently completed Munsieville Sewer Pumpstation among others, bears testimony to these efforts and progress. A detailed and updated account will be shared after engagements with the relevant provincial offices.
