Environmental committee to inspect Mogale’s troubled infrastructure amid concerns

An oversight visit regarding several municipal issues will be conducted by the Portfolio Committee on Environment, Agriculture and Rural Development on November 1.

The Portfolio Committee on Environment, Agriculture and Rural Development (EARD), led by Jaco Mulder, is set to conduct an oversight visit to Mogale City Local Municipality’s (MCLM) infrastructure from 09:30 on November 1.

Mulder said the visit is driven by urgent concerns regarding environmental pollution that threatens the province’s ecological future. This includes visits to the Mogale City Landfill Site, the Percy Stewart and Flip Human wastewater treatment facilities, Dr Sefularo Village, an unproclaimed housing project, and Brickvale in Tarlton, a settlement built on sinkhole-prone dolomite and currently affected by a sewer spill.

“The committee will focus on the troubling conditions at Mogale’s landfill site, which has been impacted by ongoing fires. The oversight aims to hold the municipality accountable for its failure to resolve persistent issues at the site, particularly the debilitating state of wastewater treatment works that cause raw sewage runoff, posing serious health and environmental risks, especially during the rainy season,” Mulder expressed.

He added these practices have led to significant air and water pollution, introducing harmful organic pollutants, nutrients, and E coli into the environment.

“Such contamination poses serious health risks to both ecosystems and communities that rely on these water sources.

“This oversight is part of the legislature’s broader commitment to ensuring accountability and promoting sustainable environmental practices within the municipality,” Mulder concluded.
