Water meters targeted by a syndicate, councillor opens case
A police case has been opened by a ward councillor due to a suspected water meter theft syndicate.
Brass is a metal that is commonly stolen for scrap metal. Water meters contain this metal and recently, according to ward councillor Mark Trump, houses with these meters have been targeted.
However, Trump has had enough after yet another meter was stolen in the CBD recently. He suspects that a syndicate may be involved.
“This has been ongoing for about two months now, and has gotten to the point where two to five meters are being stolen every day, in the CBD, Wentworth Park and Krugersdorp West, ” Trump believes.
He continued that when these meters are stolen, it wastes thousands of litres of clean, drinking water and costs anywhere from R8 000 to R15 000 to replace.
“I thus opened a criminal case of damage, theft and vandalism with the police, where the charge can be up to 30 years imprisonment. I want to thank the police for their helpful and efficient service,” Trump concluded.
