New committee elected to promote arts and culture in Mogale

MCLM's Arts and Culture Forum has elected a new committee to promote art and culture in town.

The Mogale City Arts and Culture Forum, which was established in April 2018 to serve as a consultative and promotional body driving sustainable arts and culture development within the city, recently elected a new committee during an annual general meeting.

According to Mogale City Local Municipality (MCLM) communications officer Refilwe Mahlangu, the forum’s primary goals include facilitating organised and impactful arts and culture programmes, promoting community engagement in arts and culture-related matters, identifying and securing grant funding opportunities, representing local artists in stakeholder engagements, and managing and maintaining a comprehensive database of local artists.

“The forum was created to address gaps in arts and culture programming and to foster partnerships that promote cultural identity, economic growth, and community cohesion,” she added.

Attendees cast their votes.

Refilwe continued that the forum functions as a collaborative platform where local artists and industry stakeholders engage with MCLM, but also with provincial and national governments, as well as the private sector. It further ensures representation across various arts and culture sub-sectors, reflecting the diversity of the municipality’s artistic community.

Key attendees at the annual general meeting included Mayor Lucky Sele, Member of the Mayoral Committee for Sport, Arts, Culture and Recreation Cynthia Mankazana, the previous chairperson of the forum, over 100 local artists and sport, arts, culture and recreation officials from Mogale City and Gauteng Provincial Government.

The newly elected executive committee for the 2024–2026 term consists of:

• Chairperson: Edward Kati
• Deputy chairperson: Paul Hodgson
• Secretary: Kagiso Selele
• Deputy secretary: Tshepang Morontsi
• Treasurer: Ntebo Sebogudi
• Organiser: Aminos Jaca
