Authorities still out and about checking food compliance laws
The municipality and government stakeholders remain committed to checking food safety at local shops.
Mogale City alongside the police, the West Rand Health District and other law enforcement agencies recently took to the streets to ensure that food compliance laws are being obeyed as well ensuring that health risks are being reduced.
To ensure food safety compliance and to reduce the risk of foodborne illnesses, the MEC for Health and Wellness, Nomantu Nkomo Ralehoko together with the police’s Provincial Commissioner Lieutenant General Tommy Mthombeni, Mogale City Mayor Lucky Sele and Environmental Health Practitioners, conducted a food safety blitz at grocery stores and butcheries on the West Rand as part of the Asibe Healthy initiative.
According to Ralehoko, the initiative is a government programme led by the Department of Health in which many stakeholders take part.
The recent programme on the West Rand was sparked by the increase in cases and deaths due to illicit and expired goods being sold to citizens, especially children. The initiative aims to promote food safety, adherence to health regulations and environmental standards.
