Is Mogale winning the illegal dumping battle?

The municipality recently embarked on a cleaning campaign at illegal dumping sites and identified sites that require urgent intervention.

Illegal dumping has been a huge problem in Krugersdorp, especially since the landfill was closed in 2024.

Mogale City Local Municipality (MCLM) communications officer Refilwe Mahlangu said their waste management team acknowledges the backlog in clearing illegal dumping sites and assures residents that efforts to clear sites began on January 18.

“Resources have also been reprioritised to ensure compliance and safe reopening of the Luipaardsvlei Landfill Site to minimise this growing scourge and its dire shortcomings,” she addressed.

She continued to say that although all identified illegal dumping sites require intervention, waste management identified Kagiso Court, Mayibuye opposite the ECD Centre, Father Gerald Park, Kagiso Library and Extension 12 taxi rank as areas that require urgent intervention.

“The clean-up programme was expanded to other areas on January As much as the municipality is concerned and thus committed to the full implementation of this cleaning programme, its further expansion is dependent on the allocation of largely financial-dependent resources, which will be allocated during the January/February budget adjustment process,” Mahlangu concluded.
