Beyers finally being upgraded

After years of delays, the tender process for the upgrade of Beyers Naudé Drive has finally been completed.

Beyers Naudé Drive (M5) is being upgraded to provide for increased traffic volumes between the N14 and Peter Road in Muldersdrift.

Councillor Shenan Cochrane said the long-awaited project that began in 2023 unfortunately came to a halt after just a few months and the site was abandoned by the appointed contractor.

“The Provincial Roads Department had no alternative but to again put the project out to tender to see the project’s completion,” she explained.

Over a year has passed with residents and motorists being inconvenienced by the now deteriorating roadworks.

Cochrane said she has demanded answers and progress regarding the upgrade project on an ongoing basis since 2023.

“With concerns mounting, I sought assistance by escalating the matter to Evert du Plessis, a Member of the Gauteng Provincial Legislature and member of the Provincial Roads and Transport Portfolio committee,” she continued.

Subsequent to a recent site visit to Beyers Naude by Cochrane and Du Plessis to highlight the difficulties and inconveniences to motorists, urgent questions, submitted last week, to the Department at last provided positive feedback.

“Du Plessis, having received details, has confirmed that the tender process has been completed. Administration and preparation work is currently in progress, with groundwork expected to begin in early March 2025,” she said ecstatically.

“This is fantastic news for our residents, local businesses and developers who have had to hold back projects till the upgrade is complete. We look forward to seeing the teams on site and works completed which will bring much-needed development and opportunities to residents,” Cochrane concluded.
