Luipaardsvlei Landfill Site to reopen

The Luipaardsvlei Landfill Site will reopen to the public after nearly six months.

Residents faced months of inconvenience but Mogale City Local Municipality’s (MCLM) Waste Management Division confirmed that the Luipaardsvlei Landfill Site will officially reopen to the public on February 12.

According to MCLM communications officer Refilwe Mahlangu, to ensure a smooth transition and prevent overwhelming the facility, the reopening will follow a phased approach. This measured rollout is designed to maintain operational efficiency while accommodating the city’s waste disposal needs.

“Waste Management remains confident that the reopening will play a significant role in curbing the persistent issue of illegal dumping in open spaces, which has been a challenge during the site’s closure,” said Mahlangu.

She added there will be no fee charged to use the Luipaardsvlei Landfill Site as long as there is no hazardous waste (such as paint, chemicals, batteries and fluorescent bulbs) and if any waste does not exceed 500kg.

To enhance security and proper site management, the following new control measures have been implemented:

• All vehicles and waste reclaimers will be searched before entry and upon exit
• Only registered waste reclaimers with municipal ID cards are permitted on-site
• Pedestrian access is restricted to registered waste reclaimers only
• Weapons of any kind, including knobkerries, spears, and firearms (licensed or unlicensed), are strictly prohibited
• Only vehicles transporting waste are allowed entry
• Parking around the landfill site is not permitted
• Illegal dumping in open spaces will result in an R10 000 fine added to the offender’s municipal account, as per the Waste Management By-laws of 2023

”We sincerely thank residents and businesses for their patience as we worked diligently to bring the landfill site up to compliance and operational readiness. A special note of appreciation goes to those who continued to dispose of waste responsibly at nearby landfill sites rather than resorting to illegal dumping,” Mahlangu said.

The operating hours for the site are as follows:

• Monday to Thursday between 07:00 and 16:00
• Friday to Sunday: Closed to the public
• Public holidays: Open if on a Monday to Thursday; closed if on a Friday
