Heavy rainfall leads to major road maintenance roll out

Mogale City Local Municipality plans on refurbishing affected parts of town following heavy rainfall.

After experiencing heavy rainfall in February, which accounts for about 50% of the annual total normal rainfall, Mogale City was forced to roll out road and stormwater maintenance, including pothole repairs and the grading of gravel roads in rural areas.

According to Mogale City Local Municipality communications officer Refilwe Mahlangu, the ongoing rainfall and wet conditions have not only hindered planned maintenance and led to reactive upkeep work but also created a backlog of work for the Roads and Transport division.

The division has assessed some of the affected areas and is implementing a rollout plan to address the pothole backlog during the next six weeks, focusing on main arterial roads, collector roads and residential streets.

“Maintenance of gravel roads also commenced on February 24 and within the next six weeks, extensive effort will be made to grade gravel roads. While appealing to our residents, road users and all affected parties to drive carefully on the affected roads, we thank you for your patience as the team endeavours to restore most of our roads within the targeted timeline,” Mahlangu said.
