Lanseria Smart City project gains momentum
Government officials, developers, investors, community leaders, and researchers gathered in the Cradle of Humankind for a key summit regarding South Africa’s first Smart City, which is gaining momentum.
The long-envisioned Lanseria Smart City project is gaining momentum nearly five years after President Cyril Ramaphosa first announced it in his 2020 State of the Nation Address.
Mogale City Local Municipality (MCLM) communications officer Tendani Shavhani said this project is planned as South Africa’s first Smart City. The development spans parts of Johannesburg, Mogale City and Tshwane and borders the North West’s Madibeng Municipality.
She added that earlier in April, government officials, developers, investors, community leaders and researchers gathered in Mogale City’s Cradle of Humankind for a key summit, where the event aimed to tackle challenges around planning, co-ordination, and implementation of the massive development.
Hosted by the Gauteng Growth and Development Agency, the summit focused on aligning stakeholders to realise the President’s vision of a high-tech, eco-friendly, and inclusive urban hub. Issues such as unclear roles, funding gaps, and weak coordination between municipalities and the province were highlighted as obstacles to progress,” she explained.
Executive Mayor Lucky Sele emphasised the potential transformation of the area from a small town to a modern economic and innovation hub. He stressed the importance of preserving the city’s rich heritage while creating jobs, attracting investment, and promoting sectors like tourism, agri-processing, and high-tech manufacturing.
“To support this, Mogale has begun work on a new precinct plan covering key areas such as the World Heritage Site, airport, and housing developments, set for completion in 2026,” Tendani concluded.
