Workers and patients concerned over sewage leak at Noordheuwel Clinic

DA calls for immediate action to address the sewage situation at Noordheuwel Clinic.

The sewage crisis at Noordheuwel Clinic is posing a health and safety risk for its patients and employees due to the untreated wastewater that is flowing next to it.

The environmental violations at this public health institution are especially concerning to the many elderly and children who utilise the clinic.

During a recent oversight inspection, the Democratic Alliance (DA) found that the women’s restrooms were obstructed, as most toilets were blocked.

The stink outside is horrible,” said Ward 21 Councillor Lynette du Toit.

“The unhealthy state of the environment around the clinic grows worse every day due to this problem. We discovered that it took months of repeated requests for the Gauteng Department of Health to send a team from the Sanitation Department in Mogale City to look into the matter.”

Upon a visit to the clinic, the Krugersdorp News witnessed the drains overflow onto the lush, green grass, which Du Toit considers to be a breeding ground for rodents, while the wastewater from a clogged manhole continues to flow uncontrolled.

“My top priority is the health and safety of patients, staff, and the community.

I will work tirelessly to resolve this crisis and prevent similar issues in the future,” she said.

The News approached Mogale City Local Municipality for comment on this matter, but the communication officer, Refilwe Mahlangu, did not provide feedback. Mahlangu referred the News to the Gauteng Department of Health, which also did not respond.

The DA is dedicated to making sure that the patients who come to the clinic daily receive the hygienic and high-quality medical care they are entitled to.
