Concerns rise over tall grass

Overgrown and neglected: There are increasing worries about the condition of the ward's grass.

Residents of Struben Drive in Rant-en-Dal are concerned about the overgrown grass in a field on their street that is not being maintained by the municipality. This poses a security, fire safety and health risk.

“In addition to the tall grass posing a risk, it is also unattractive. The overgrown grass has to be mowed to improve the appearance of our community,” Ward 29 councillor Aloysha Jooste said.

Tired of seeing her ward like this, Jooste decided to do something about it and joined hands with AfriForum.

“The current contractor tasked to cut the grass, unfortunately, has a three-year contract and completed only half of the work, leaving sections overgrown and a large portion still to be cut.

Manpower, equipment, stock and funds – that’s what we need to overcome this problem,” she said.

Jooste mentioned she approached Mogale City’s Development Integrated and Environmental Matters Department (DIEM) for a solution.

“I went to DIEM’s office every day to enquire, but I didn’t get any response. Because I did not get a reply from the Members of the Mayoral Committee, I decided to cut the grass as the department told me they have to attend to all wards and can’t just cut Ward 29; however, they never did anyway,” she said.

The Krugersdorp News approached Mogale City Local Municipality for comment on this matter, however, they did not respond at the time of print. Their feedback will be published once received.

Jooste and AfriForum members started cutting grass on May 22 and finished on May 27.
