Hands-on help: Locals lead Krugersdorp CBD clean-up effort

Community members and stakeholders came together for a clean-up in parts of the CBD – one of the main areas was at the old Scout Hall.

In a show of unity and pride, residents, various stakeholders from Mogale City and local organisations joined forces to clean up parts of the CBD and to help restore the area’s appeal.

The clean-up was organised by community activist Peter Vilankulu, who said the initiative was to urge and raise awareness among Mogale City residents to clean up their city and decrease the issue of pollution in the CBD.

According to Ward 20 councillor Mark Trump, one of the main areas was near Boshoff Street at the old Scout Hall, which had become a site for illegal dumping, substance abuse and crime.

Trump added that ironically, the abandoned hall had its anniversary on June 27 and has been standing for 94 years. Present at the clean-up were Mogale City Waste Management workers, community volunteers and Netcare Krugersdorp Hospital volunteers.

”This is what community spirit looks like, working together to keep our neighbourhood beautiful, no matter the weather, we’re not just cleaning our streets, but we are aiming to build a stronger community,” Mark concluded.
