Municipality offers help, but consequences loom for non-payers

Mogale City Local Municipality (MCLM) urges residents to pay their municipal accounts to avoid losing access to essential services such as water and electricity.

While flexible payment plans are available for those struggling financially, residents who ignore warnings and fail to respond risk disconnections and further penalties.

According to MCLM communications officer Refilwe Mahlangu, ratepayers who deliberately avoid paying their accounts and refuse to communicate with the municipality leave the credit control team with no option but to take action.

“This is necessary to protect service delivery and ensure the municipality’s financial sustainability,” she said.

If you do not respond or take any action, she said four things will happen:

• You will receive an SMS notification about your outstanding account
• A final letter of demand will be emailed or delivered to your door by their authorised credit control service providers (Cigicell and Ntiyiso Consulting)
• Still no response? Your water and/ or electricity will be disconnected
• Continued non-payment will result in your account being handed over to debt collectors for legal recovery
