Streetlight failures leave parts of Krugersdorp CBD in darkness
More than 500 faulty streetlights in Krugersdorp’s CBD and surrounding areas have raised serious safety concerns.
Large sections of the Krugersdorp CBD remain in darkness at night due to numerous non-functioning streetlights, raising serious safety concerns.
Ward 20 councillor Mark Trump described the situation as a crisis, saying an inspection conducted in November recorded 507 non-working lights across the CBD, Luipaardsvlei and parts of Krugersdorp North.
He warned that poor lighting creates dangerous conditions for motorists and pedestrians, while also allowing criminal activity to flourish. Trump added that he has been reporting faulty streetlights for more than a year, particularly along major routes such as 3rd and Van Riebeeck streets.

Mogale City Local Municipality confirmed it is aware of streetlight failures in the CBD.
Municipal spokesperson Adrian Amod said faults are identified through public reports or during quarterly inspections carried out by the Energy Services team across all 39 wards.
He explained that theft, vandalism and shortages of repair materials can delay repairs, but acknowledged that non-functioning streetlights pose safety risks and remain the municipality’s responsibility.
