Rand Water dismisses poisoned water claims
Rand Water has urged residents to ignore misinformation and rely on verified platforms after false claims about poisoned water circulated online.
As concerns about water safety continue to circulate on social media, residents are being reassured that tap water remains safe to drink.
Following the circulation of a WhatsApp voice note claiming that dam water had been poisoned and should be boiled before consumption, Rand Water spokesperson Makenosi Maroo confirmed that the claims are false.
Maroo explained that Rand Water extracts raw water from the Vaal Dam, which then undergoes extensive treatment before being supplied to residents.
“Vigorous and continuous testing is conducted on both the raw water and the treated bulk water prior to distribution to consumers, including municipalities,” she said.
She added that recent tests on the bulk water supply show results that are fully compliant with the South African National Standard for Drinking Water.
“We are the bulk water services provider and remain committed to protecting the health of consumers. We can confidently confirm that residents may continue to safely drink water directly from the tap,” Maroo said.
She concluded by urging residents to rely on official communication channels. “Should any bulk water-related matter arise, we will communicate formally through our verified platforms. Residents are encouraged to rely on Rand Water’s official channels for accurate and credible information regarding drinking water quality.”
