Switchgear damage leaves Kagiso Hostel in the dark

Kagiso Hostel residents remain without electricity after switchgear damage disrupted supply, with repair work still underway and no restoration time confirmed.

Residents of Kagiso Hostel were left without electricity on the evening of Wednesday, May 6, after a fault at a key municipal power installation triggered a widespread outage.

Mogale City Local Municipality’s Energy Services has confirmed that the interruption is linked to damage to the switchgear supplying the hostel.

According to senior communications practitioner Tendani Shavani, early assessments suggest the system was overloaded by electrical appliances connected to the network.

“The technical team is currently in the process of sourcing an alternative switchgear unit from external service providers to assist with repairs and restoration of supply. At this stage, there is no estimated time for power restoration,” she said.

By Thursday, residents were still in the dark, with no clarity on when electricity would be restored, as municipal teams worked to secure replacement equipment and repair the damaged infrastructure.

The municipality said it will provide updates as soon as progress is made.
