Some heroes wear service station caps
Faith in humanity has been restored after petrol attendant Thabane Namane saved Amanda Mansell-Jones from a situation that could have ended badly.
Just when you’ve given up hope in humanity, along comes someone who restores your faith and hope in people.
Amanda Mansell-Jones, a guesthouse owner, was saved by petrol attendant Thabang Namane, from the Shell Service Station situated on the corner of Cecil Knight Street and Robert Broom Drive on Sunday, December 11.

Jones explains that she went to the service station as she needed to refill her car with petrol and she needed to withdraw money for an international guest of hers.

“We stopped at Shell garage which was the closest garage that has a Standard Bank ATM,” she said. While she was at the ATM, three unknown men from two cars looked at Jones, the drivers of the two vehicles spoke to each other, Jones added, “It seemed like they were discussing me, while pointing at me,” she said.
She says that she withdrew the money and went straight to the convenience store passing the men on her way. Not realising that she was followed.

“One of the men followed me but I only realised it when he was behind me with a few items in his hands, asking me to pay for it. I told him I don’t have that kind of money and that I work hard for my money,” she said.

She said one of the petrol attendants who was outside the store walked in and told the man to put the things back on the shelve and advised him to leave.
Namane was the hero for Mansell-Jones that day and she expresses her gratitude towards Namane as he took the car keys of the man who had been making Jones feel uncomfortable and distracted them.
“He told me he is going to confront them and I should leave in the meantime,” she said.
Shell Rant-en-Dal’s manager Thabang Motseki said that he was happy with Namane’s behaviour, “At Shell we strive to make our customers happy and their safety is our priority” he said.
