“I set high expectations for myself. At first I would feel so disappointed because I set them so high because I knew I could reach that potential, but I always fought for what I wanted,” he said laughing.

“Especially with the teacher, because after every exam I would go through the memo where I went wrong or better yet, where can I get the extra mark,” he said.

Having been accepted at the University of Pretoria, Sechaba will be studying towards a BCom Law degree known in Latin as Legum Baccalaures (LLB) and he expressed his excitement for varsity.

“I originally wanted to become a pilot but have been interested in studying LLB since Grade 11,” he explained. He also said that law is the next best thing because he sees himself advocating for those who are not able to themselves.

“I want to fight for someone who is not in the position to defend themselves.”

He further explained that he always believed he could obtain six distinctions, however, it did not sink in when it actually happened.

“Let me not say I don’t know how, because I had a plan. I told myself some of the subjects must be my distinction subjects because I have obtained distinctions in them before, so I can get the distinctions for them in the finals,” even though there were two subjects in which he did not receive distinctions, he says he was prepared for it.

Even though his mother and other siblings stay in Limpopo, his grandmother, uncle and aunt have made matric a breeze as they gave him all the space he needed to study.

“Even though my mom was far, she remained the most supportive person and she would advise me on how to prepare for exams,” he said.

With varsity coming up, Sechaba believes it will teach him more about life going forward.
