Police pounce on armed suspect

An unknown suspect was found to be in possession of a firearm with its serial numbers filed off.

Kagiso Police launched a stop-and-search operation on the main routes of Kagiso recently.

According to a statement released from the office of the acting Station Commander of Kagiso Police, Colonel Dorrete Greyling, her members conducted a vigorous operation at Rietvallei extension 4 searching not only motorists but also pedestrians.

“During the operation, an unknown suspect was found to have a firearm with its serial numbers filed off and five rounds of ammunition,” her statement read.

“He was put under arrest and his unlicensed firearm was recovered. The suspect was later detained at Kagiso station where a case docket of possession of an unlicensed firearm and ammunition was opened.”

Rietvallei is among the worst areas contributing to violent crime.

Colonel Greyling applauded the members for their vigilance and commitment to removing firearms from the wrong hands.

“I’m very much impressed by the members’ vigilance and readiness to fight crime at any given time,” she said.

The suspect is expected to appear before the Kagiso Magistrate’s Court soon.
