Councillor opens his heart, donates school shoes

Setlolamathe Public School learners are grateful to Kagiso Lekagane who made a school shoe donation recently.

With February being the month of love, councillor Kagiso Lekagane donated shoes to school children, a cause close to his heart.

On February 16 he visited the Setlolamathe Public School and Thembile Primary School to hand over 30 pairs of school shoes to each school. He explained that in the past he held a soccer tournament but this year he realised that there is a desperate need for school uniforms.

Growing up he also struggled with school uniforms and he believes that it gives a child dignity to have school shoes and a proper uniform.

“Your background must not determine your future,” he said, adding that the dignity of any child starts with their school shoes and their hair.

The money from the shoes came from donations that he had raised. He also spoke to the school management and said that he will be returning in June to donate school jerseys.

The team went with councillor Kagiso Lekagane as well as school representatives.

Setlolamathe Public School’s principal, Taga Robert Mankgaba told the News that they are very thankful for the donation. He explained that they are a no-fee school and have many learners who are needy or come from child-headed households.

He added that shoes are very important to the learners and sometimes they opt to not come to school due to them not having shoes.

“It gives them a sense of belonging, it gives them dignity.”

The councillor then went back on February 22, to donate even more shoes to the learners of Setlolamathe Public School.
