Cateract camp gives 62 patients their sight back

More than 8 800 people have been blessed with sight since the inception of the cataract camp and recently 62 patients were added to this number.

Leratong Hospital recently held a Cataract Camp where 62 patients had undergone cataract operations.

Fikile Oyekanmi from the hospital explained that they held the camp on February 18 and 19. The project is run by the Leratong hospital’s Ophthalmology department in partnership with the Islamic Medical Association, Awquaf SA, and the Pakistan Community of South Africa.

This project and partnership were established in 2005 and have been rolled out to different health facilities. They aim to assist underprivileged communities that cannot undergo cataract operations. The project ended on February 20 with a closing ceremony.

The ceremony was held to recognize the work done through the cataract camp project and to appreciate all the partners,” said Fikile.

Doctor Dieketseng Moloi, the hospital’s CEO applauded the Ophthalmology doctors for giving sight back to their patients. While Dr Shabbir Hussain, the Head of Leratong Hospital’s Ophthalmology Department explained why it is important to take care of your eyes, he said that although an eye may be a tiny part of our bodies, it plays a major role in our lives.

Patients also had a chance to share their testimonies about their journey before and after the operations. To date, over 8 873 cataract operations were done since the inception of the project.
