Iconic Munsieville church gets a makeover
Hundreds of residents volunteered to give the Munsieville Pentecostal Church a new look to celebrate Mandela Day.
The Munsieville Pentecostal Church has been declared a provincial heritage site. The church has been synonymous with the liberation struggle against apartheid as it has hosted many secret meetings held by struggle heroes, many of them being ANC leaders.

“Among many of the heroes who used the church as a hiding place from the then apartheid government was Winnie Mandela,” said church pastor Bishop Simon Mogomotsi.
“This is also the place where Winnie made her famous speech in the 1980s regarding informers or “mpipis” who would be necklaced with a tyre and killed for their disloyalty to the liberation movement,” he said.

July 18, widely known as Mandela Day, was thus the perfect day for members of the community of Munsieville to take the initiative and give the church a makeover.

Hundreds of residents volunteered to give the church a ‘new look’ to celebrate Madiba. Also in attendance were various stakeholders including the West Rand Department of Social Development, Department of Sports, Arts Culture and Recreation along with members of the congregation of the church.
