Khosa aims to make Krugersdorp ‘the top rugby town’
Re-established in 2019, Khosa Rugby Club hopes to dominate various rugby competitions in years to come.
Khosa Rugby Club may be relatively young and new but they are without a doubt getting stronger and improving each year.
One of its many goals is to develop players to represent Krugersdorp as the top rugby town.
According to first team coach Jacques de Villiers, the club was re-established in December 2019 with only one team to represent them. Now the club has grown to four teams (first team, second team, the U21s, and a women’s team) who represent the club in the Golden Lions Rugby Union (GLRU) Senior Grand Challenge League. He added the club has a pool of players who are young, energetic, tenacious and hungry for success.
“We hope to dominate various rugby competitions in the next few years,” De Villiers said.

So far, the first team has competed in competitions such as the Memorial Shield which they won in 2021; the Memorial Cup, and two amateur rugby competitions that were established by the GLRU in 2021 and 2022. They were also semi-finalists in the Senior Grand Challenge in 2022.
However, it does not end there as De Villiers said the club is striving to take its teams to compete against the elite in the GLRU Pirates Grand Challenge. The club is currently competing in the Senior Grand Challenge League and sits third on the table at the time of printing and hope to make the final.
“The road to the final will be tough as Khosa will be battling top teams such as Germiston Simmer, Randfontein Rugby Club, and Diggers, but with our strong support base, dedicated coaches, experienced EXCO, and talented players – the 2023 final must be on the cards.
“Khosa is privileged to have great and loyal sponsors who are actively involved in the senior and youth rugby sections of the club. Khosa Youth Rugby also has about 300 junior players from U6 to U14 dominating the rugby fields of Gauteng every Saturday while building the brand! These juniors excel at their respective schools and many of them go on to represent the GLRU in all age groups. Our sponsors make all that is happening possible.
“The Khosa Rugby Club executive consists of people that have been involved in the sport for decades and is a definite factor to the club’s success. All the coaches at Khosa do what they do for the love of the game and are not paid. Each player’s growth is our reward.”
