Owners and furry friends treated for free by Woodrock

If you missed the Woodrock Animal Rescue outreach recently where they sterilised and vaccinated dogs for free, you can still join their other two upcoming events coming up soon.

The Woodrock Animal Rescue recently held a free sterilisation and vaccination project in the area for residents from all over as well as their furry friends.

Woodrock’s outreach and acting clinic manager Jenelle Erasmus explained they have outreaches like this once a week. They sterilise dogs on a Wednesday and can sterilise between 50 to 70 dogs a day.

Amanda Kleingeld from the Esperanca Animal Care Foundation became aware of these outreaches and asked the organisation if they could come to Krugersdorp. On August 16 they had 33 dogs that were sterilised.

The organisation picks up the dogs and then neuters them and brings them back the next day. This is all done for free. Apart from being neutered, these dogs also get vaccinated, receive their rabies shots, and are treated for ticks and fleas. Finally, they are dewormed and the owners are given a bag of dog food.

However, the services are not limited to individuals who want their pets sterilised; if you have an already sterilised dog, you may bring it in and it will receive the necessary shots or treatments it requires, including a bag of food.

This is done to support pet owners who do not have the financial means to get this done at a vet. Woodrock wants to promote the sterilisation of dogs, especially in underprivileged areas. The animal rescue is located in the Hennops Rivier Valley in Pretoria and carries the full cost of their outreaches.

Erasmus added that their aim for the recent visit was to get 20 dogs sterilised but that they far exceeded that number. Apart from sterilisation being their main focus they also want dogs to get their Rabies shots, as this directly affects the community if one dog gets sick.

“Our day was successful, we did not see any horrible cases and overall the dogs were healthy and well looked after,” she added.

But if you missed the opportunity, do not fret as they will be back on August 22 and August 29 to collect and help more dogs. They will be set up behind the Kingdom Hall of Jehovah’s Witness on Victor Street in Luipaardsvlei and if you would like to book for this service you can contact Kleingeld on 072 276 7211.

If you would like to assist Woodrock to make this service available to more dogs, you can donate to their clinic at Woodrock Sterilisation Clinic, First National Bank account number 627 657 17875, Cheque Account with the reference sterilisation donation or contact them on 076 155 4439. Each sterilisation costs R500 and they aim to sterilise 200 animals a month.
