Kagiso parents urged to lead by example

The Gauteng Department of Social Development invited Kagiso residents to a parental skills programme.

It is common knowledge that adults have to do their utmost to protect, provide and financially support their children. It is equally important for parents to look at their parenting skills and teach their children right from wrong to one day become upstanding citizens.

On August 17, the Gauteng Department of Social Development invited residents of Kagiso to Kagiso Memorial Hall for what was a very productive and educational programme for parents to learn how to raise healthy and strong children.

Programme director Sarah Pelele.

The department successfully grows and implements programmes for the eradication of poverty, social protection and social development among the poorest of the poor, the most helpless and the sidelined, through its partnerships with its primary customers, service recipients and all those sharing its vision.

Kagiso was among the most important areas where the programme was conducted due to high levels of parental neglect being reported according to West View Clinic who was among the stakeholders of the event.

Residents and parents who attended the event.

Throughout the programme, residents were taught about the rights of their children as well as bringing awareness to the mental and physical effects of parental neglect.

Programme director Sarah Pele encouraged parents to be more considerate concerning raising their children.

“Parental neglect can have heavy consequences for the early development of a child so it’s important for parents to listen and be aware of their children’s behaviour for the sake of their development,” she said.

The programme would conclude with attendees playing fun sports and engaging with various stakeholders who would provide more information regarding parental skills.
