The hills are alive with the sound of parkrunners

Over 100 people to part in what was a fun affair at the 5th Sterkfontein parkrun.

It was a tiring yet wholesome affair for many who participated in the Sterkfontein parkrun at Sterkfontein Lodge on September 23. Over 100 hikers and runners could not hide their excitement as they would take part in the fifth anniversary of the Sterkfontein parkrun.

The parkrun is a 5km event every Saturday morning for participants from all walks of life and kicks off at 8:00 at Sterkfontein Heritage Lodge, 1 Wolf Street, Rant-en-Dal, Krugersdorp.

It does not matter if participants are hikers, runners or professional athletes. If you have running shoes, hiking sticks and water around then you will enjoy the chilly breeze and sensual sunlight at the annual parkrun.

The parkrun offers an opportunity for the local community, regardless of age or gender, to come together regularly to enjoy the outdoors and get physically active. Participants are encouraged people to run, jog, walk and volunteer at the event, and the best part about the event is that it is free of charge.

To take part in this wonderful experience, participants can register online for their first-ever parkrun. Once registered they will never have to do so again when they intend on taking part in the run future.

Runners can challenge themselves while enjoying all the wonders that Mother Nature has to offer while completing the course. The course is 5km long and is run entirely on trail paths. Some sections of the course accumulate mud, leaves, and puddles after rain but marshals are available at key sections of the course, and signs are put in place to guide hikers and ensure their safety.

According to the event organiser Deryn Venski, this is the 5th anniversary of the parkrun and he was overall satisfied with the turnout.

“Sterkfontein opened a parkrun on September 21, 2018. This year marked the celebration of the 5th anniversary of the parkrun, we organised it on the Heritage Day long weekend because we wanted to encourage people to dress up in cultural attire as well as show support for the Boks in the Rugby World Cup,” Venski said.
