Elderly get active in Wentworth Park
Three elderly homes went head-to-head in Juksei.
Golden Age Retirement hosted their monthly Jukskei Games recently to help keep elders fit and active.
Krugersdorp Council Care For the Aged, Emmanuel Old Age Home and Luipaardsvlei Old Age Home competed against one another on what was a sunny Wednesday, October 4 with one of them hoping to walk away with bragging rights.

The elders who participated enjoyed an active afternoon of also forming new relationships with other elders from competing retirement homes.
According to Golden Age’s manager Kobus Garbers, the games form part of the active ageing programme for elders that was introduced by The Department of Social Development.

The department stated on its official website that the programme is guided by the Older Persons Act (Act 13 of 2006) and the Madrid Plan of Action on Ageing. The department in partnership with The Departments of Health, Sports and Recreation and the South African Older Persons Forum introduced the Active Ageing Programme to transform the ageing experience and empower senior citizens to stay active and engaged so that they can continue to enjoy living healthy and purposeful lives.

The programme was introduced by Minister of Social Development Lindiwe Zulu in 2022 with the hopes of improving life expectancy for South African elders.
