Breaking a sweat at local college for a good cause

Gloomy weather did not hold back the community from participating in UniCollege's annual fun run and walk, this time for Fora.

More than 150 people made their way to the UniCollege West Rand campus for their annual Fun Run and Walk on November 4. What could have been a typical relaxing Saturday morning at home saw eager residents breaking a sweat for a very good cause instead.

The Fun Run and Walk is an annual event hosted by UniCollege every year to encourage the community to reach and support their local community organisations. This year saw Friends of Rescued Animals (Fora) being the organisation that will be aided. Fora is a life shelter that houses over 350 unwanted dogs and 150 cats. The animals are dewormed, vaccinated and sterilised, given any veterinary care needed, and given a warm bed and good food.

UniCollege campus manager Jackie Loots highlighted how important the run was and how the funds raised will help Fora.

The run was open to all age groups in the community.

“The fun run is to encourage our community to unite in raising funds for an NPO, get some fresh air and exercise. The fun run and walk then ended in a foam dome which saw people of all ages having lots of fun. Every participant received a medal, which has become a collectible to our regulars. We raised over R5 000 which will be donated to Fora because we are all dog and cat lovers. We want to help the helpless and the voiceless, that was the goal,” Loots said.

Albert Loots, Janko Ooloofse, Ruben de Koker and Kian Fourie had some fun in the foam.
