The day was made more exciting and competitive as the learners participated in a maths theme competition and took part in a food collection initiative where they collected 1 200 jars of Purity baby food.
On March 19, teacher Shannon Staniforth and a group of Grade Seven learners visited The Cradle of Hope to donate the jars. The encounter was incredibly touching, and the room was filled with warmth and thankfulness. Milan Dasrath, a Grade Four Crawfordian who, with his family’s help, donated 500 jars from his own savings.
Food insecurity means that you do not know where your next meal will come from,” said CEO of The Cradle of Hope, Melodie van Brakel.
“We receive no support or any funding from the government. This remarkable donation will make a huge impact on our service delivery to a suffering community in Krugersdorp and surrounds.
“We will record how many babies and children receive this nutritional food, ensure fair allocation, and conduct follow-ups with the families that we serve to evaluate the nutritional benefits.”
Cradle of Hope fundraiser Annamien Smith thanked the school in a personal e-mail.
We eagerly await and are looking forward to any future support from them.”
By comparing pre- and post-distribution of this donation, the Cradle can determine if this will help reduce hunger and malnutrition among poor and less fortunate communities where babies are experiencing stunted growth.
