Mabuti started his career as a firefighter almost 20 years ago, in 2006, when he worked at the Randfontein fire station. In 2009, he moved to the Krugersdorp station as a volunteer, and in 2014, he started there full-time,
“I wanted to be a paramedic, however, my career led me to become an EMS official as a firefighter,” he explained.
Four days on, four days off is the shift system he follows, where during the day, he trains with his team to ensure they are fit enough to handle the job.
“We need to be in shape for when we get a call to respond to a scene because if you are not fit enough, you do not want to easily get exhausted,” he said.

Mabuti’s favourite part of the job is when they need to respond to calls, as he lives for the adrenaline rush to get to a scene.
Above that, the best part of the job is to save lives,” he emphasised.
Even though they save lives, there are times when they cannot. Despite their victories, it still weighs on his heart when someone cannot be saved.
“We know this happens sometimes, and the only way to cope with it is to handle one scene at a time and not to let the losses build up,” he explained.
He concluded by saying that residents should always know that when they call, they will always arrive, even if they face challenges to get there.
