New wheels for three learners with Muscular Dystrophy

Muscular Dystrophy Foundation of South Africa donates three motorised wheelchairs to learners at West Rand School.

Three West Rand School learners living with Muscular Dystrophy were recently gifted custom motorised wheelchairs, thanks to a partnership between the Muscular Dystrophy Foundation of South Africa (MDFSA), the National Lotteries Commission of South Africa (NLCSA), and Wheelchairs on the Run.

This life-changing initiative, carried out on April 15, is part of the MDFSA’s ongoing efforts to support individuals affected by the condition with essential mobility aids.

“This initiative was made possible through a generous grant we received from the NLCSA. Working with Wheelchairs on the Run, we ensured that each wheelchair was tailored to meet the unique needs of each child,” explained the general manager of the MDFSA’s Gauteng branch, Robert Scott.

Our goal was to provide the learners with greater independence and mobility, which not only enhances their quality of life but also promotes inclusion,” he added.

He continued that they try to do initiatives like this as often as funding allows, where they aim to provide support such as assistive devices and care equipment to individuals living with Muscular Dystrophy. This relies on donor and grant support.

“Moments like these are deeply meaningful – not just for the children and their families, but for all of us at the foundation. We’re incredibly grateful to the NLCSA for their continued support and to Wheelchairs on The Run for their dedication. Together, we’re working towards a more inclusive society, one life at a time,” he concluded.
