According to Bethesda Clinic and Trauma Centre founder, Mashudu Neluheni, many men feel unsafe due to the emotional pain they endure, and it is often due to the stigma surrounding men’s mental health. However, it does not mean that the social issues and pressures faced by young men and boys should be ignored. She said this is why the new trauma centre that will soon be established will provide help for many men.

The Bethesda Clinic and Trauma Centre was a vision formed by Mashudu, who worked as a social worker in various government departments.

After dealing with a very serious case in which a colleague was arrested for murdering their partner, Mashudu saw a gap in the workplace regarding how gender-based violence cases are often handled by state officials when it comes to men.

“I recognised that there was a huge stigma in the manner in which cases of abuse were handled.

Men often get judged or mocked when they open up about their issues, which in turn means they have to hold in their emotions and thoughts, and it can be very destructive for their mental health and morale, leading to a destructive path.”

Mashudu added that many men have turned to using drugs, alcohol, and other substances to cope with their issues, which is why she felt the need to start the centre to accommodate men of all walks of life in Kagiso. While it mainly caters to men, she added that women and young girls are allowed to use the services. People have to book an appointment before they can be assisted by psychologists and social workers.

“The centre will open at the end of May,” she confirmed. If you would like to have additional information, you can contact Mashudu on 067 776 8305

The centre is located near the open space on Tlou Street in Kagiso and will be open from 08:00 to 16:00.
