Inquiry begins after tragic light aircraft crash

A routine flight ended in tragedy north of Lanseria as a light aircraft went down. Authorities confirm one fatality, and a full investigation is underway.

The light aircraft that crashed north of Lanseria on the morning of June 5 is now the subject of a full investigation.

Gregory Critchley, chief of operations at the Aeronautical Rescue Co-ordination Centre (ARCC), said they were alerted to the incident shortly after it occurred and immediately activated the Gauteng Early Warning Network to co-ordinate emergency services.

The wreckage was quickly located. Sadly, one person (a man) was found deceased at the scene, while the other sustained serious injuries and was airlifted to the hospital,” said Critchley.

The scene has since been handed over to the police and aviation authorities for further investigation.

Critchley thanked all responding agencies for their swift action and extended his condolences to the family of the deceased.
