Bethany House Trust founder hands over operational reins after 28 years
After nearly three decades of guiding The Bethany House Trust, Gert Jonker steps aside, paving the way for a new era of women-led leadership.
After 28 years at the helm, Gert Jonker steps back as The Bethany House Trust (BHT) merges its CEO and COO roles into a single executive position.
According to Gert, BHT has undergone a strategic restructuring process aimed at strengthening governance, ensuring financial stability and advancing its transformation agenda to promote women’s leadership within the organisation.
After leading BHT for nearly 30 years, Gert told the Krugersdorp News that he opted for voluntary retrenchment on October 7.

His wife, Antoinette Jonker, will now oversee BHT’s operations in her capacity as COO, where Gert added that this ushers in a new era of women-led leadership.
As the founding trustee, Gert will continue to provide strategic guidance from his board seat but will no longer be involved in operational matters.

He added that Tebogo Itumeleng and Dr Peter Skosana retired as trustees, marking BHT’s transition into a women-led organisation.
“We thank them for the valuable work they performed on the board. Antoinette will soon announce the appointment of replacement trustees who will carry on with the fiduciary responsibility of leading the trust,” he concluded.
