Benefit Organ Concert to preserve Krugersdorp’s historic pipe organ
Residents are encouraged to make their way to NHK Church in Krugersdorp West for a benefit concert this weekend.
A Benefit Organ Concert at 15:00 on October 25 in Krugersdorp West will raise funds to preserve one of South Africa’s most historic pipe organs.
Built in 1955/ 56 by South African Organ Builders in collaboration with EF Walcker & Co (Germany), the organ was the first in the country to feature a Rückpositiv. A Rückpositiv is a specific type of pipe organ division. In organ design, the instrument is divided into sections (called “divisions”), each with its own set of pipes and sometimes its own keyboard (manual). According to concert organiser Pierre Smit, he has played a key role in the instrument’s recent revival.
“It remains a treasured part of the Krugersdorp West Congregation’s musical and spiritual heritage. The concert is both a celebration of the instrument and a continuation of its legacy – with all proceeds going directly to its maintenance and restoration,” he said.

Pierre added that the concert will feature performances by two organists: Professor Theo van Wyk, an international performer and South Africa’s first DMus in Organ Performance, and Smit himself, the current organist of the Krugersdorp West Congregation.
“This promises to be a powerful afternoon of music, history and community engagement – a great story for your readers interested in culture, music and heritage preservation,” Pierre said.
