Community confronts police over unsafe CBD

Students and residents took to the streets of Krugersdorp, demanding stronger police action and safer streets in the CBD.

Following a week marked by violent crimes, including the alleged murder of a student and the killing of a man by illegal miners, students and community members took to the streets on Friday, November 7, to demand accountability and greater police visibility.

Councillor Mark Trump confirmed to the Krugersdorp News that the CBD is currently the most dangerous area in town, recording the highest rate of violent crime in the municipality.

“Crimes such as armed robbery, gender-based violence, and sexual assault are the most prevalent,” he said.

During the march, young people delivered a memorandum of demands at the Krugersdorp Police Station, calling for urgent action and stronger policing in the CBD.

According to resident Obakeng Modise, the memorandum urged police to remove criminals occupying hijacked buildings and properties, increase visibility in high-crime zones, and ensure taverns and liquor outlets comply with regulations.

In addition to safety concerns, residents also raised issues such as pollution and sanitation as part of broader efforts to revitalise the Krugersdorp CBD.
