Is it a bird? Or a plane? No … it was a Hawk!

From Harvards to Huey helicopters, the skies came alive as air force veterans and elderly residents took flight during the community flight programme.

The sound of rotors and roaring engines filled the air as helicopters, light aircraft and even a fighter jet swept over Krugersdorp on November 18, turning the normally quiet skies into a flurry of aviation activity.

The spectacle formed part of Elders Flight Day at the Jack Taylor Airfield. According to organiser Felix Gosher, the aim was to give elderly residents the chance to experience flying for the very first time.

Around 500 elderly residents took to the skies. Felix explained that the event is hosted annually and that this year marked its fifth edition. The team has also hosted several children’s flight days for underprivileged youngsters to enjoy their first taste of aviation.

“We gave the privilege to air force veterans to relive their glory days in the sky. They had the opportunity to fly the planes they did, many years after service,” said Felix.

The Krugersdorp News attended the event, where an impressive line-up of aircraft – among them Harvards, Bosbokke and Huey helicopters – kept residents looking skyward. The crowd buzzed with excitement when a Hawk fighter jet streaked past the airfield.

“We would love to sustain this, and hopefully we will be able to continue this for the community in the future,” Felix concluded.
