VIDEO: Mogale targets drunk, reckless drivers this festive season

Mogale City launches a no-nonsense festive road safety campaign, urging motorists to respect the rules, protect lives and arrive alive.

With the festive “silly season” in full swing, the Mogale City Local Municipality (MCLM) has launched its Safer City, Arrive Alive campaign.

The campaign kicked off on December 5 outside the Krugersdorp Game Reserve, featuring a roadblock staffed by multiple law enforcement agencies, including police, Public Safety and Crime Prevention Wardens.

Public Safety manager William Ngidi highlighted the importance of the campaign as travel increases during this period, especially to Krugersdorp, which attracts numerous tourists.

“The campaign focuses on educating drivers about key road safety practices, such as not drinking and driving, avoiding cellphone use while driving, obeying traffic signs, and driving responsibly. Human behaviour causes 85% of accidents, and road safety is everyone’s responsibility. Those who drive irresponsibly, we are ready for you,” Ngidi warned.

Ngidi added that plans for the festive season include roadblocks, roadworthy tests and street patrols to ensure everyone arrives safely.

“Krugersdorp has many busy roads where people pass through, and visible policing is essential. This directive ensures Public Safety works together to keep roads safe. Safe roads are crucial for tourism to thrive in our town,” he said.

Mayoral spokesperson Palesa Molefe concluded with a firm warning to motorists.

“This festive season, Mogale City is taking a no-nonsense approach to road safety, law enforcement and community protection. Our message is clear: Respect the rules, protect lives and arrive alive.”
