No mercy for unsafe scholar transport in Mogale City

Stricter scholar transport inspections are underway in Mogale City as authorities act to protect learners following the Vanderbijlpark tragedy.

With scholar transport under intense scrutiny following a tragic crash involving several learners in Vanderbijlpark, the Mogale City Local Municipality’s (MCLM) Public Safety division has intensified compliance operations to ensure the safety of children.

According to MCLM assistant manager for media and PR, Refilwe Mahlangu, Public Safety operations are guided by the Gauteng Department of Roads and Transport, with a focus on stricter monitoring of scholar transport operators to ensure adherence to safety regulations and applicable legislation.

“We remind scholar transport operators that legal and safe operation is not optional,” Mahlangu said.

She explained that drivers are required to hold a valid driving licence and apply with the necessary documentation, including:

• Copy of the service contract (for contracted services)
• Certified copy of ID and a valid driving licence with PrDP
• Valid SAPS clearance certificate
• Proof that the vehicle is roadworthy and registered
• Original SARS tax compliance status
• Proof of residential address
• Recommendation letter from a school bearing an original signature and official school stamp
• List of learners with parent or guardian contact details
• Proof of insurance, including insurance indemnity cover
• Route description
• Where a CK or business is used, certified copies of directors must be submitted, and all documentation must reflect the CK or business details, including SARS records

Residents are advised to submit applications to the West Rand Transport Operating Licence Administrative Body, located at the corner of Kagiso and Mmusi streets. The application fee is R600.

Mahlangu concluded that the Gauteng Department of Roads and Transport urges parents, guardians, and community members to report reckless driving or unsafe scholar transport vehicles to the Gauteng Traffic Inspectorate on 0800 428 8364.
