Remembering a cricket star
Cricket SA and Krugersdorp High School launch a bursary in memory of the talented young cricketer who tragically passed away last year.
Krugersdorp High School (KHS) recently marked a historic occasion as the Deputy Minister of Sports, Arts and Culture, Peace Mabe, in partnership with Cricket SA, launched the Retshegofetse Sennelo Bursary Fund.
According to Lauren Coetsee, the school’s head of marketing, learners will benefit from R1m in funding provided by Cricket SA and supported by the Department of Sport, Arts and Culture.
The bursary honours the memory of Retshegofetse Sennelo, a talented young KHS cricketer who tragically passed away last year following a freak accident during a match at Christian Brothers College in Boksburg. He was severely injured after colliding with a teammate during the game.
“It is more than just a ceremony; it is a celebration of potential, perseverance, and purpose. We are here to honour not only achievements on the field but also dedication to balancing sport with education,” said Mabe.

She added that sport teaches discipline, teamwork, and resilience – qualities that extend far beyond the game. The bursaries provide more than financial support; they are an investment in the education, dreams, and future of aspiring athletes. They serve as a reminder that the community believes in these young people and that their hard work does not go unnoticed.

Coetsee added that the bursary will make a meaningful impact in developing the next generation of learners.
“A year ago, we were heartbroken by the loss of one of our learners in what seemed like such a senseless accident. However, we are reminded that God has a bigger plan, and we do not know the script He has written for us. Tshego’s death has led to something far greater: Today, Cricket South Africa launched the Retshegofetse Sennelo Bursary Fund. Three worthy recipients were chosen, and the handover was done here at the school,” Coetsee said.
