Disability awareness event in Kagiso breaks barriers

The seminar highlighted challenges faced by children with disabilities and ways to foster understanding.

The Nomfundo Zondo Foundation, together with public community stakeholders, recently hosted a disability awareness seminar at Kagiso to highlight the challenges faced by children with disabilities.

The event, attended by over 100 people at Kagiso Recreational Hall, aimed to break stigma and promote understanding.

According to the foundation’s founder, Nontombi Zondo, the foundation regularly conducts awareness campaigns to teach communities how to interact with and support people with disabilities. The initiative promotes inclusion across schools, workplaces, and public transportation.

“During the programme, attendees were engaged through entertainment and educational sessions that offered insight into disabilities. Parents were also given guidance on how to navigate life with children who have disabilities. We cater to people with various disabilities, and through this programme we broke down barriers and stigma, fostered inclusion, and encouraged a more accessible society,” Nontombi said.

Nontombi explained that the foundation is active in areas such as Mohlakeng, Randfontein, Krugersdorp and Kagiso.

“It frequently organises community-driven events, including disability awareness sessions at local halls, collaborating closely with community stakeholders to ensure meaningful participation and impact,” Zondo concluded.
