Public speaking excellence from Alma Mater

The school’s public speaking season continues to shine as two learners excel at a drama and speech competition.

Alma Mater International School’s public speaking season continues to take shape, with two of their senior learners standing out at the Drama and Speech College competition for their poise and exceptional oratory skills.

Grade 10 learners Javas Magweregwede and Otlotleng Banda excelled at their recent speaking event, achieving distinction and placing among the top speakers in the West Rand.

According to coach Melissa Nieuwoudt, their dedication, preparation and courage to stand and speak publicly are a true reflection of the high standards upheld at Alma Mater. Participating in such a prestigious platform not only showcases their individual abilities but also reinforces the importance of effective communication and self-expression.

The competition is hosted across Johannesburg, with different schools volunteering to host various rounds. Learners are judged on multiple aspects, including the quality and relevance of the information in their speeches, tone and intonation, eye contact, body language, timing, and overall confidence. They work diligently to develop speeches that are informative, engaging and well-delivered, capturing the audience’s attention throughout their presentation.

“Their confidence, charisma and stage presence had the crowd captivated from start to finish. They have made us proud, made hosting look effortless, and we couldn’t be prouder as the spotlight shines on them,” Melissa said.
