From setbacks to style: Young entrepreneur builds streetwear brand from scratch

After facing challenges in his soccer career, a young entrepreneur turned disappointment into determination, launching a streetwear brand that speaks to resilience and self-belief.

For Zano Gobeni (30), the end of one dream became the start of another – and a brand rooted in resilience.
Once focused on building a future in soccer, his ambitions were cut short by what he describes as “soccer politics”, forcing him to rethink his direction at a young age.

Rather than dwell on the setback, the Swaneville-born entrepreneur redirected his energy into something new. That moment of uncertainty became a turning point, leading him into fashion and entrepreneurship, and ultimately to the creation of his streetwear brand, Up Since Day One.

His background and personal experiences shape Zano’s journey. His work reflects where he comes from and the challenges he has faced, carrying a message of perseverance and growth. For him, success is not just about business, but about pushing forward despite obstacles.

Starting with very little, Zano made a bold decision to invest in himself. Instead of using the money given to him for personal needs, he chose to take a risk and start a small venture, launching Up Since Day One with just four T-shirts. That decision laid the foundation for what he continues to build today.

Like many entrepreneurs, his path has not been easy. He has faced financial constraints, struggled to access consistent, quality materials, and had to navigate the impact of the Covid-19 lockdown, which disrupted both supply and demand.

Despite these challenges, Zano has remained consistent. He uses social media platforms such as Facebook, Instagram, TikTok and WhatsApp to connect with customers and grow his brand, adapting to a changing business environment.

His creative process is largely instinctive, often drawing on his own thoughts rather than external influences. This allows him to remain authentic while developing his ideas and expanding Up Since Day One.

Looking ahead, Zano has clear ambitions. He hopes to establish a physical presence in his community, starting with a small shop and eventually expanding into a larger space within his township. His long-term vision reflects both personal growth and a desire to create opportunities closer to home.

He believes resilience is key to any journey and encourages others to take the first step, even when circumstances are uncertain.

“Start now. It won’t be easy, but remember why you started,” he said.

Through determination and self-motivation, Zano continues to carve out his own path – turning setbacks into stepping stones and building a future on his own terms through Up Since Day One.
