Traditional dishes like biryani and bunny chow play a vital role in keeping culture alive.

Kaylee Alli is celebrating her Indian-South African heritage and culture during Heritage Month.

Kaylee, who has Indian and Mauritian ancestry, says she is proud to be part of Azaadville’s multicultural community, which includes many residents with roots in India and Bangladesh.

Culinary traditions keep culture alive

She noted that traditional food plays a vital role in preserving their heritage, with favourites including biryani, butter chicken, mutton curry and bunny chow.

“Living out your heritage preserves it and your community,” she said.

Community values and open culture

According to Kaylee, the community’s friendly people, religious values and traditional food make its culture unique.

“Our culture is very open and clear. We have very friendly and religious people, which plays a big role in our culture,” she concluded.
