West Rand School in need of financial help following hijacking

'The sum insured isn't nearly enough to replace the vehicle. We are therefore appreciative of donors to assist us in the event.'

West Rand School now relies on private companies to transport its learners with special needs after one of its minibuses was hijacked this week. Fortunately, no children were in the minibus at the time, and the driver was also safe.

Deputy principal Freddie Jordaan said the school had the minibus since 2011 where it transported their learners from all over the West Rand, even as far as Westonaria.

“We currently offer transport to 100 learners. These children either have a disability or a learning barrier. They are placed in the school to receive specialised teaching and help,” he explained.

Jordaan added that making use of private companies to transport learners comes at a high cost.

“This has left a big gap in our bank balance and we do not have the budget,” he added.

“The sum insured isn’t nearly enough to replace the vehicle. We are therefore appreciative of donors to assist us in the event. Furthermore, the governing body will have to launch projects to pool funds,” he continued.

Jordaan concluded it is sad that the high levels of crime further limit the children, who already have special needs, access to a free and fair education.

Having to outsource transport puts huge strain on the school’s finances, if any resident wants to make a donation to contribute to a new school bus, contact the school on 011 668 8200 or email dp@westrandschool.co.za.
