Mogale City promotes green habits at farm school in Magaliesburg

Practical lessons, dignity support and recycling tools were used to encourage sustainable habits among learners in Magaliesburg.

Learners at Maloney’s Eye Primary Farm School were placed at the centre of environmental action on January 26, as World Environmental Education Day was commemorated in Magaliesburg.

According to Mogale City Local Municipality’s (MCLM) senior communication practitioner, the initiative – led by Mogale City’s Environmental Education and Awareness unit – formed part of ongoing efforts to strengthen environmental awareness and promote responsible environmental behaviour among young learners.

She said the programme engaged learners in practical, age-appropriate environmental education activities focused on caring for the environment and adopting sustainable habits at both school and home.

“Through interactive discussions, learners were encouraged to understand environmental challenges and recognise their role in contributing to solutions that support a healthier, more sustainable future,” Shavani said.

She added that in support of learner well-being and dignity, Grade 6 and Grade 7 learners received dignity packs aimed at boosting confidence and fostering a supportive learning environment. The school also received four 240-litre recycling bins to encourage waste separation at source and reinforce recycling practices within the school community.

“The commemoration highlighted the importance of equipping learners with the knowledge, values and skills needed to become environmentally conscious citizens, while strengthening collaboration between environmental stakeholders and educational institutions,” she continued.

For MCLM, by combining education, dignity support and practical environmental tools, the initiative underscored a shared commitment to building an informed, responsible and environmentally aware generation.
