Would you be able to tell the truth?

Pastor Gerrit Mes; from the pulpit.

Almost every South African and hundreds of millions around the world knows the names, Oscar, Roux and Nel, the three main characters involved in a very public court battle.

Things that seem irrelevant become crucial, words can become weapons.

Innocent or guilty, most of us feel Oscar’s pain as he defends himself.

This made me think about a verse in the Bible that warns against casual, thoughtless statements. It is so easy to say something that you cannot ever take back.

Like Oscar, the Bible says we all one day will face judgment. At that time even the words we have spoken will be recalled.

“You will be judged by every word that comes out of your mouth.”

I am so glad that I am not in court, that I don’t sit in Oscar’s seat and that I don’t have to face the pressures he faces. But it is a good time for all of us to look at our lives. If you were put on the stand today, would you be able to look the judge in the eyes and tell the truth.

Ephesians 4:29: “Do not let any unwholesome talk come out of your mouths, but only what is helpful for building others up according to their needs, that it may benefit those who listen.”
