Do you know what true religion is?

Pastor Gerrit Mes; from the pulpit.

Life has a way of imparting great wisdom.

One lesson that most of us has learnt is that there is bad in the best of us and good in the worst of us. Because of my line of work, I meet lots of religious people.

You can spot them a mile away, that look of superiority and attitude of judgement. But often, on closer inspection, many of these people are less than perfect. Not all; many really walk the talk.

Recently I spent time with a friend who most would not consider religious.

A man who openly confesses that he feels guilty sitting in church. Yet the conversation quickly reveals that this man practices more of the Christian virtues than many of the religious people who fill our churches.

His actions speak of generosity, kindness and forgiveness. A sinner who knows he needs God.

As I walked away, I found myself asking, what is true religion?

James 1v27: Religion that God our father accepts as pure and faultless is this, to look after orphans and widows in their distress and keep oneself from being polluted by the world.

True religion is not what happens in church on Sundays, it’s what happens the rest of the week.
