About breasts and bras: unravelling the mysteries (part 2)

A bra is part and parcel of every woman’s everyday life, and every woman should know the basics of bra fitting.

Hallo there, it is me again, your Breast friend Natie Spangenberg, owner of Comfit/ Pandora Bra Studio in Krugersdorp, ready to enlighten you once more about the complex nature of The Bra.

In my previous blog I pointed out the three important points to look for when buying a bra – the back size, the cup size and the shape of the cup.

Now the bra cup is there for shaping only, so it is important to understand how this bra and breast shape thing works.

A bra cup with a wire does not necessarily give you better support than a bra without a wire. That is a misnomer. You will hang over the wire or just spill out underneath, and if this is the case it is because the wire is there for shaping only, not support.

The wire in the bra cup pushes the breast inward and upward so if you are big breasted and have a lot of breast tissue at the cleavage area the wired bra most likely will push you breast inward and upward and make double bubbles, you know, like bread dough that has risen too much; or it pushes your breasts so tightly together that they look like a speed bump.

With a wired bra, the best way to test whether the wired cup fits the shape of your breast is to sit down and lean slightly forward. If the wire between your breast move away from your body and you can store your cell phone in that space, then that bra is not for you.

I call a bra like that a crumb catcher.

The wire must stay snugly against your body for if it is sitting on top of the breast tissue then your breast will push it down onto your rib cage and it will hurt. And on top of this “injury” you will have no support and the “insult” is that your breast will be on your rib cage with your bra!

And nothing says “old and tired” like a low hanging breast!

When you are viewed sideways you do not want to have the silhouette of a potato.

Your bra should put some space between your breast and your stomach.

I dare you to do this test. Go on! Stand in front of the mirror, turn side ways and relax your shoulders. Your breast point (nipples) should be halfway between your shoulder and your elbow.

That is what your bra is supposed to do for you. So to all the potatoes out there, you need help girl!

Go for a proper professional bra fitting! Until next time.
